Cold Flow Properties
of Biodiesels
One of
the greatest challenges for biodiesel producers is meeting the European
standards for viscosity at low temperature (so that the fuel flows properly
through the engine and atomises correctly). This property is principally
evaluated via the Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) test.
High
CFPPs are particularly a problem for feedstocks with long and/or saturated
glyceride chains. This includes waste vegetable oils, but the greatest
interest is in selling palm oil biodiesel into Europe Winter market.

project will investigate the low temperature rheology of biodiesels, and a
number of means of improving CFPPs, both in-process and retrospectively,
